日本でも人気の海外ＴＶドラマ『SUPERNATURAL』が、なんとアニメとなって生まれ変わった。制作を手掛けるのは『サマーウォーズ』などで高い評価を受けるマッドハウスで、新進気鋭の演出家、宮繁之といしづかあつこが共同で監督を務める。世界でも例を見ない、海外ドラマのアニメ化という一大プロジェクト。この新たなる試みに挑んだ宮監督に話を聞いた。

『SUPERNATURAL』は、サムとディーンのウィンチェスター兄弟が、闇の世界の者たちと死闘を繰り広げる物語で、’05年から放映されている人気シリーズ。それが、アニメでどう描き出されるのかが気になるところだが、そこで展開されるのは、よりハードでスタイリッシュな味わいを増した、アニメーションだからこその“スパナチュ”の世界だ。宮監督は語る。

「マンガのアニメ化も面白いんですが、絵がありきなので、良くも悪くもそれに引っ張られてしまうんですよね。今回は元々がドラマなので、同じにはならないですし、同じなら作る必要もない。こちらに委ねられた部分も大きかったので、やり甲斐がありました。ドラマは45分ですが、アニメは21分。尺が短くなる分、表現も変えなければいけない。そこで逆にキャラクターのリアリティを追求することができて、より深いものを作ることができました」

個性の違うふたりが難しい事件に挑むというのは、ウィンチェスター兄弟にも、そして宮といしづかの共同監督にも重なる点。宮監督は「僕はアクションシーンが得意で、いしづかさんは情緒的な部分が得意。くっきり分かれていたから、いい具合にできました」と言う。「僕は実生活では弟なんですが、共感するのは兄のディーン。いしづかさんは優秀で、弟のサムのタイプ。スタッフのコントロールが本当にうまいんです。そのいしづかさんを姉のように頼ることもあったので、時にはサム的な部分も出ていたかもしれないですね(笑)」

日本のアニメだからこそ構築できる、リアルにしてドラマティックなもうひとつの世界観。ドラマファンもアニメファンも注目だ。
